Lynette Marie Hofstadter[1] is a payroll accountant who works at Whitlock High School. She first appears in the Season 2 episode "Wednesday Morning, 8 AM", and serves as Jack Griffin's love interest until the first episode of Season 4.
History[]
Season 2[]
In "Wednesday Morning, 8 AM", Jack first seeks out Lynette when he discovers that she is in possession of his massage chair. When he requests that she returns it, Lynette quotes philosophy at him and attempts to psychoanalyse Jack's upbringing. While she gets everything wrong and refuses to give up the chair, Jack is instantly smitten by the way they match wits. He schemes with his students to steal the chair back and takes Lynette's chipmunk statue in retaliation. When she returns the chair, he confesses to stealing the chipmunk. In response, Lynette confesses to stealing his wallet off his desk and tells him to keep the chipmunk, as she will "figure out a way to get him back".
In J'Accuse, Jack attempts to impress Lynette at Michelle's annual murder mystery party by claiming he can beat her record of solving the murder in 47 minutes. He succeeds by discovering that Lynette is the murderer, only for her to reveal that she killed him just before he figured it out. While Jack is disappointed, Lynette proposes that they form an alliance to win the game in record time and share the prize. Together, they take out the rest of the party guests, grab the prize cookie cake, and sneak out.
Jack and Lynette retreat to the school's football oval to split the cookie cake, and the two share a kiss. However, Lynette grows apprehensive about a relationship with Jack when he mentions he can't wait to get out of Toledo, while she states that she is "here to stay".
In Melvin, Jack attempts to take Lynette out on a date. Lynette, believing that their conflicting opinions about settling down in Toledo don't make them a good fit, suggests that they remain friends. She agrees to hang out with him platonically, and they plan a movie night together at Jack's place. When Jack expresses frustration at his neighbour Melvin for "testing" his car alarm at nighttime and sawing down a tree in Jack's yard, the two scheme to get revenge. Together with Jack's students, they successfully steal Melvin's pet dog.
In Dr. Whoopsie, Lynette asks Jack how he's doing after his fall before teasing him for the viral video. Later, after he falls down the manhole, she expresses concern as he's being wheeled into the ambulance. He claims he's dying and asks her for a "French kiss goodbye", to which she playfully retorts that she'd rather not as he was just in a sewer.
Jack and Lynette's movie nights become a regular occurrence, as seen in Handcuffed. Despite their romantic feelings for one another, they continue to avoid labelling their relationship. When asked by Seth, Lynette says that she and Jack participate in "mostly outercourse".
In Ride the Ram, Lynette is seen participating in Whitlock's Spirit Week.
In Kinda Sorta, Jack dreams of a life where he has settled down with Lynette and the two have started a family together. Horrified at the prospect of remaining in Toledo forever, he withdraws from Lynette and doubles down on insisting to Stef, Mary, and Michelle that there is nothing he will miss once he gets out of Toledo. Overhearing the conversation, Lynette grows upset and begins dating hockey player Nico Marshak to move on. However, upon deciding that Jack is the person she's in love with, she breaks up with Nico.
Jack and Lynette reconcile. Jack confesses his feelings for her, claiming that he wouldn't resent a life in Toledo so much if he were with Lynette and that he doesn't want to date anyone else but her. She confesses that she feels the same way and the two kiss.
